Hi, I have a similar problem. I can't burn cds/dvds in Karmic 9.10. I
tried command line, brasero and gnome-baker, using an internal and
external drive. None of them works. I booted into a different distro on
the same machine - and all went well, I was able to burn a dvd - so it's
not a hardware issue. When using brasero, it just can't see a blank dvd
in the drive, same for gnome. Also, usually gnome after inserting a
blank cd/dvd asks what to do with it, in my case this didn't happen.

My hardware:
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm)64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
Motherboard: A8N-VM CSM-NBP
Drive-internal: ATAPI DVD A DH20A4P
Drive-external: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GE20NU10

Output from command line (some top lines cropped to include only
importand stuff):

Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW.

I know dvds are becoming a thing of the past, but every now and then I
need to burn one... so please help.

All the best
