@Robert: As I expected, adding the xorg.conf you specified didn't change
anything as it was already being detected as cirrus.

I tried using the vmvga driver instead of the cirrus driver, and that
made gnome-screensaver work properly. It would appear that the crash is
related to some capability of the cirrus driver. Of course, the cirrus
driver is the default one for kvm, so it would be nice to get it
working.
