I can confirm this also (mine is on i386). If I try to launch any app
from the Applications menu the app fails to open and the panel
momentarily disappears but then refreshes itself.
If the same app is iconified in the panel it will launch fine from
there. If the app is not in the panel it launches fine using the cli.
