I noticed the same described behaviour with my 8 character password:
When my session starts (automatic login) gnome-keyring asks me to enter a
password to unlock network-manager WEP key.
After having inserted my password, if i confirm it hitting the ENTER button GDM
and (and X) crashes and I have to login again.

I noticed that this happens only the first time I login after a normal
startup process. After the first crash and the second login, nothing
strange happens anymore. I also noticed that if I don't hit the ENTER
button (and i use the "ok" button clicking with the mouse) GDM doesn't
crash immediatly but it waits until the key ENTER is pressed. (I opened
the chromium web browser, i typed an URL address and i hit ENTER to
confirm... and GDM crashed).

I hope this description will be in someways useful
