Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: rhythmbox
I'm currently running a fully upgraded alpha version of Ubuntu Lucid.
When I plug in my Creative ZEN device I often, but not always, get one
or multiple "Media player device error" messages, informing me that
Rhythmbox was "Unable to open the Creative ZEN device". In spite of the
message the device is successfully opened, and shows up in the device
list after a short pause.
In the output in terminal after starting Rhythmbox as a normal user (posted at
the end of this bug report) I notice a sequence of messages starting with
"Device 0 (VID=041e and PID=4157) is a Creative ZEN." and ending with
"ignoring usb_claim_interface = -16ignoring usb_claim_interface = -22LIBMTP
PANIC: Could not open session! (Return code 767)". This sequence is repeated
three times, each time followed by the line "Try to reset the device". In this
particular session I was also given three of the aforementioned pop-up error
messages. I'm no expert, but it seems reasonable to infer that the device had
to be reset three times before connection was eventually achieved.
In addition to the underlying problem, which I have no further useful
insight into, I feel that spamming the user with multiple identical pop-
up error messages is a problem in and of itself, and degrades the user
experience. In my case connection is always achieved in the end, but it
seems to me that if it wasn't I could easily end up with a very large
number of these error messages. If it is normal and expected behaviour
for the application to make a few attempts before achieving connection,
error messages should probably be suppressed until a certain number of
attempts have failed, and once the first message has been given, further
identical messages also ought to be suppressed.
This is the output in terminal:
