Not fixed, it turns out. (Thanks for reminding me to check - I'd gone
back to Karmic.)
I resume to a blank screen, the backlight cycles on, off, and on again,
and then I get a dialog letting me know that ubuntu is running in low
graphics mode (or the x server is not working, or something like that).
The first option, to run in a reduced graphics mode, works fine;
restarting the x server doesn't.
Resume still works perfectly if I initiate the suspend from the menu.
