I am having the same problem. It seems to be related with "X-Ubuntu-
Gettext-Domain=nautilus" getting added at the top of the
/usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop file (actually all
nautilus*.desktop files I had a glance at look that way).

Also, starting nautilus from a terminal results in the following output
before dumping core:

(nautilus:12768): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Could not load desktop file
'/usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop': Key file does not start with
a group

Removing the first line from /usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop fixes 
things for me, looks like something in the build system is messing up those 
desktop files. Some applications seem to be able to cope with that though, but 
at least nautilus is not.
