Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools
In Ubuntu 8.04 and earlier there was a clear way, using network-admin, to
rename a computer without editing /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname.
With the migration to NetworkManager, network-admin is now missing
entirely from gnome-system-tools, leaving previous completed features
that are not relevant to NetworkManager entirely absent.
This leaves end-users with no simple way to set or change their system
names.
Searches on the forums suggest that new users run: sudo vi /etc/hosts
/etc/hostname and edit manually. While this is straightforward enough
for someone familiar with *nix systems, it has and will continue to
prove difficult for people new to Linux.
I haven't reported this with earlier releases, as other bug and forum
posts indicated that this was a temporary situation with the move to
Network Manager. With the next LTS release looming, I dearly hope there
is time for this rather glaring omission to be rectified. No doubt, a
quick Python GUI would be fairly trivial. To me, this is a prime
example of a highly-visible paper cut.
