Since your problem was not a bug, I am changing the status to represent
that. Don't feel that your bug report was useless, this system is in
place to help the people working on Ubuntu improve your experience.
Also, since you used my chmod command I suggest you type the below
command to keep your systems permissions properly in place.
sudo chmod 755 /var
this command allows you, under root permission to write to this
directory, but with any other permissions only read and execute.
