I get this problem a lot, so much that each time I launch Evolution I get anxious about whether it will hang with the "Formatting message (...)" or not. Currently running version 2.28.3. Contrary to what Markus Birth reported above, mine hang without a message being sent, often immediately after launching Evolution.
