Old laptop, Ubuntu lucid, installed (not upgraded).
After unsuccessfully trying to switch Appearance preferences/Visual
Effects from None to Normal gnome-appearence-properties stops
responding.
First I get a dialog saying "searching for available drivers") (only
first time after Restart, not after Force Quit)
Then a lot of screen flicker happens and I receive message box saying
"Desktop effects could not be enabled", which is what I expected.
But when I press the OK button then the message box is not responding,
and the contents of the Appearance preferences/Visual Effects window and
the message box are not repainted.
If I click the x button I get this message "Metacity is not responding.
You may choose...".
When I look in System Monitor while this happens there are 2 processes
named gnome-appearence-properties: one has a blue icon, and the other
one has a grey/red icon. I used ubuntu-bug on the latter.
I can then press the Force Quit button and the stale windows will go away.
