Binary package hint: plymouth

After recent lucid updates, am unable to login to Desktop. The login was
just bouncing back to login screen, but now a little terminal opens.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:    Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release:        10.04

$ apt-cache policy plymouth
plymouth:
  Installed: 0.8.1-4ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.8.1-4ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 0.8.1-4ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3. I expect to be able to log in.
4. A small terminal opens on top of the login splash; if I type 'exit', the
window closes, Am returned to login screen.
