I didn't try vlc, but mplayer worked just fine. This was in Karmic. It's not my machine, so I don't think I'll upgrade to Lucid to try it out before the official release. I'll try to duplicate this with my machine and the same DVD next week though, and might upgrade then to try it out, if the problem shows up there too.
