Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

=== Abstract ===

In xrandr, VGA and LVDS are renamed to VGA1 and LVDS1, so gnome-display-
properties doesnt function anymore

May be related to bug #353186

=== Details ===
When I plug my external screen into external the VGA socket, it's well
recognized and immediately clones my laptop's screen.
But It's a 50" and my laptop only has a 9.8" one. So I want to have a very much
more better resolution on my external screen.

When I launch gnome-display-properties, everything seems ok. I see both
screens. But whatever action I take in the application, it has exactly
no effect. If I uncheck the "clone screens" checkbox, everything stays
identical. If I try to change the resolution of my external screen,
nothing happens.

I've thought it was a side effect of Compiz, so I uninstalled it.
Effectively, it solved the problem... until the next reboot.

I investigated further and found this page (in french)
http://www.matthieuamiguet.ch/actus/karmic_xrandr where Matthieu
explains that his screens have been renamed in xrandr.

I tried his manipulations and it worked.

Currently, I have to launch
xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto --output VGA1 --auto --left-of LVDS1
to have the resolution I want
