Might not be caused only by XChat-GNOME since the crashes started after I installed the unstable Murrine GTK2 engine from ppa:~ken-vandine/gnomexx I think it could be related to the Human-Lucid window decoration theme or the Inverted GTK+ elements theme. The Human-Lucid GTK+ elements theme has got issues with some windows, including XChat-GNOME, most likely because of those applications not support RGBA. That was the reason for using Inverted. The Human-Lucid window borders use transparency as well.
