I have a similar issue on my Samsung R730, the buttons I use are Fn +
Up/Down arrow. They don't seem to work and for some reason if I get into
Ubuntu and then plug my power charger in, the battery charges but I
don't get an automatically brighter screen.

To get the screen brighter, I have to adjust it with the Fn + Up key
BEFORE I get into Ubuntu, or have the AC plugged in before I get into
Ubuntu.
