Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Brand new installation of 10.4 here. I noticed that the volume control
that normally appears in the notification area was missing. As there is
not volume applet anymore, this meant that to change the volume I have
to go to System->Preferences->Sound.

I saw a workaround on the forums that indicated I should add the
indicator applet back to my panel and the volume control would reappear
in the notification area. I tried it and indeed this workaround works.
However, I (and apparently many other) find the indicator applet large
intrusive and unnecessary. There is no obvious reason whatsoever that
it's presence should be a prerequisite of someone changing the volume
easily!

** Affects: gnome-applets (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
