In fact, it is still happening in Ubuntu 10.04. In this paper:

page 2, formula one, there is no summation symbol (and a horrible
division one instead). Can anyone confirm that the version in Ubuntu
10.04 was not supposed to be fixed. If it was, the bug is not still
solved...
