As of April 30, Ubuntu 8.10 has reached End-of-Life. (See announcement:

announce/2010-March/000130.html) I suggest you try this again with the
latest version of Ubuntu, Lucid Lynx (10.04) and see if your problems
have been addressed in a year and a half. Additionally, neither of the
issues you mentioned are related to nautilus. Marking invalid.
