Binary package hint: zfs-fuse
Starting in 9.10, and still present in 10.04 (with zfs-fuse in the
official repos) I noticed that every time I tried to access filles in a
particular directory through Nautilus (or Thunar), something would go
wrong, with a popup message saying "Transport endpoint is not
connected". Thereafter, the whole ZFS partition cannot be accessed.
I don't know the ins and outs of FUSE or how it interacts with ZFS and
GNOME, but after a lot of experimentation I have observed the following:
1. It is always the same directory and files within it that triggers the
problem.
2. The problem cannot be fixed by restarting zfs-fuse or logging out, a full
machine restart is required.
3. The problem only occurs when using a graphical file manager. I can access
the directory and open files in it fine if I use the command line or use
Firefox or Chrome to browse to filesystem.
4. The problem only occurs when the files are accessed as a normal user - if I
start nautilus as root user, I can access the file ok.
I know the first instinct would be to point the finger at zfs-fuse, but
since I am able to access the files when run as root user, or when using
a non-GNOME method this makes me think it is potentially not its fault.
I have put zfs-fuse as the package, but it may equally be gvfs, gvfs-
fuse, nautilus or something else completely.
