Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

When a contact goes offline, and he was typing just before going offline, the
icon in the upper left corner of the conversation window remains the "typing
icon", even if the contact is obviously not typing anymore, being offline.
This is a very disturbing bug: if the contact’s connection is unstable, and he
goes frequently offline, there is no way, in the contact window, to see that
the contact is offline. So I keep waiting until he finishes to type his answer,
which obviously never happens.

I think this behaviour is wrong. Instead, the offline icon should be
showed even if he was typing before going offline, or a message should
appear in the conversation window, saying something like "your contact
is now offline. You will possibly not get a reply".
