Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Since I use likewise-open for authentication, I thought it unnecessary
to keep the one local user on the machine.

Unfortunately, deleting this user prevents choosing “Other...” at the
login screen, and also prevents typing from switching to a user name
text entry box. This makes it impossible to login.

Obviously, gdm should allow logins even if there are no users in its
list.
