I confirm the bug in HP Pavilion dv5 1140 el.
This problem doesn't affect me with jaunty and karmic, only with lucid (32
bit).
I noticed that deleting ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/%gconf.xml
and restarting the gnome-session the touchpad start working again, but this
problem is very annoying when I'm working.
