In humble option ... it would be silly if upstream partly duplicates
functionality which is already there - gnome-panel should interface with
Alacarte, which could then also provide a "properties" menu item on
actual menus and sub-menus (compare with the "explore" feature in the
Windows start-menu).
Of-course this means Alacarte first needs to be extended to support both
"open with this sub-menu X open" and "just show me the properties of
this menu item".
