Very often when I return the keyboard and monitor to this computer,
using my Raritan KVM switch, it is totally unresponsive to the keyboard,
and the monitor screen is blank apart from a logo which says "cable not
connected". The only "fix" I have discovered is to switch off the
computer and switch it on again, an extended procedure from a normal
restart, because it usually involves a file system check or the computer
mysteriously trying for several minutes to find a device which it says
is in /etc/mount but actually never is when I get to look there.
I have noticed that this denial of service never seems to occur unless
evolution mail is left running. I have another computer running ubuntu
connected via the self same kvm switch, and this never fails - as soon
as I touch the keyboard, the "cable not connected" logo vanishes and the
screen appears. So, how, with a "dead" computer, do I find out what
happened and why?
