Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

System: HP NC6000 + dock + external Dell CRT
Ubuntu 9.10 (though problem was noticed on 8.10 and 9.04)

System is normally run with laptop in dock, and external CRT connected,
with the display setup as the CRT running @ 1600x1200 on top of the
laptop screen @ 1024x768, left hand edges aligned.

The system generally misbehaves if the latop is undocked and redocked.
Undock works as expected, the windows from the CRT display are resized
and moved to the laptop display. However a range of problems can occur
on redock;

The most common is that the CRT just isn't recognised anymore, and I
have to reopen the display prefs and re enable the 2nd display (and
resize and reposition it). The system behaves as if I'd never connected
the monitor before, it didn't just miss the interrupt of having the
display attached, but it had reset the settings for some reason.

The 'theme' and general appearance of ubuntu can also change - it will
switch from 'human' to 'clearlooks'. I've also noticed that this can
happen when the system is low on memory. This makes me think that an
exception or error somewhere can cause a 'fallback' to the first theme?

The most bizarre I've so far seen is that the offsets for the second
display became corrupted somehow, and it would only let me position
windows in the right hand half of the screen, and maximising windows put
them in a thin (~200px wide) slice down the right hand edge. This
problem even persisted across reboots, and was only fixed once I'd moved
the relative position of the 2nd display a few times. The width of the
no-go area on the left was suspiciously close to being 576 (1600-1024)
px wide. Perhaps the window manager and the display driver had different
values for the screen offsets?

I'll be happy to provide any other information.
