I downloaded Lucid and ran it as a live CD. The problem remains exactly as described. I can download and then open PDFs, RTFs, but not ODTs, for which I get a "not found" or "unknown type" error depending upon exactly what I do.
Thank you for your attention to it. Thank you. As a side note, I don't think I'll upgrade to Lucid. I prefer the look and feel of Karmic; also, Lucid's web fonts were poorly rendered on the live CD. That might be fixable were I to upgrade, but I have Karmic working as I like. If GVFS were working better, that would have changed my mind as I miss the functionality, but I'm making do.
