The above apport update was collected while this sydrome is taking place. Currently upower --dump reports the battery is discharging even though the AC is plugged in and the battery indicator shows charging, but the battery indicator detail screens are inaccessible and a little rectangle pops up saying the battery is discharging. So some parts of the indicator say one thing and some say another. I'm rebooting to get out of the problem.
