Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: rhythmbox
For quite some time now (since the update to Karmic, I think), the
Rhythmbox on my computer is behaving very weirdly. I first thought, this
would be fixed soon, then used totem instead for a time, so I didn't
report this earlier. It's weird no one else should have, but I didn't
find anything, and the problems remain.
- Sometimes, rhythmbox skips ahead to the next track, or even to a track
further down, in the middle of a song for no reason. It also sometimes cuts off
the beginning of a song, starting anywhere in the middle.
- Then, the really annoying thing: Sometimes, rhythmbox edits audio files it
should play, destroying the data (I don't know, what happens exactly, but even
though the file size doesn't seem to change much, other programs can't play the
file afterwards either) and then complaining about it. And the really, really
annoying thing: to do this, rhythmbox will even change the file permissions to
make it writable! I set all my audio files to read-only after I first
discovered rhythmbox' escapades, but only changing the owner to root really
helps.
As far as I can tell, none of the problems is related to specific audio
files, they just happen randomly.
I don't know, how much of this is the fault of my local setup (it's of course
rather improbable that all users have these problems) and update history or
something. I'm currently testing a reinstalled rhythmbox to see if the problems
remain.
However, at the veryleast, somewhere in the rhythmbox code has to be a chmod()
that alters file permissions without user intervention, which imo should be
removed in any case.
