Thanks David. I stand corrected. After getting the original error message when trying to "open with..." I was misguided by the error message that I receive when I double click on the failed file (in the Firefox Downloads window): "/tmp/filename could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder. Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location." (Incidentally the file is in /tmp and can be opened by the appropriate app by double clicking).
Rather than jumping to conclusions I should have double checked. As you say David, I can indeed write to /tmp Obviously I'm a Linux newb but there's not really any excuse for not double checking.
