I only use one panel on top now. I added a second panel to test if it works now. I got no error when any more more when logging in.
Seems this problem is fixed. But there is another problem with panel - if it hangs and I do a Ctrl- Alt-Backspace to kill the X server many Gnome apps stay in background and won't go away until I kill them in a shell. I have had this problem in Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE with Gnome desktop.
