Public bug reported:
After upgrading libvte9 from 0.24.3-1ubuntu1 to 0.25.90-0ubuntu2, the
Alt modifier is now ignored in gnome-terminal. For example, in bash,
Alt+f and Alt+b used to skip forwards and backwards by a word; now they
just type ‘f’ and ‘b’.
Downgrading back to libvte9 0.24.3-1ubuntu1 is a workaround.
(To reproduce, “Enable menu access keys” needs to be unchecked in Edit →
Keyboard Shortcuts.)
