Thanks for the reply. Ran memtest on the system already, it's not a memory issue.
The system that I'm using is old and for testing. Strange thing is no issues with Ubuntu 8.04. After removing and re-installing ubuntu-desktop everything seems fine. I'm guessing something was wrong with the original install.
