May I suggest _not_ tweaking your gdm.conf in that particular way then?

Perhaps you did not notice, but I have posted a fix that works for me.
It is a patch against gdm and the package is available from
https://launchpad.net/~bugs-sehe/+archive/gdm625239

To test: simply

    sudo add-apt-repository "deb
    http://ppa.launchpad.net/bugs-sehe/gdm625239/ubuntu lucid main"
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall gdm

To revert:

    sudo sed -i '/bugs-sehe\/gdm625239/d' /etc/apt/sources.list
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall gdm

If apt-get baulks at the reinstall step (there seems to be a bug hidden
there), you might use synaptic 'Package/Force Version... (Ctrl+E)' menu
item to select the desired version. Of course you can always simply
'apt-get remove gdm; apt-get install ubuntu-desktop' but I personally
hate the big-gun approach :)

I'm very curious to know whether it'll fix your situation as well
