Update on this. It turned out that for some reason the default width
for the contact section of the window had gone to zero for all IRC
channels I use. I resized those sections with the mouse and they stayed
put. The funny behaviour with empathy autoresizing itself when I write
a long line of text is still present, so that I often have to move the
empathy window while writing to keep what I am writing on the visible
screen.
