You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Desktop icons repeatedly appear over the top of each other requiring the
user to manually separate them each time to ensure that they are clearly
and individually displayed. When USB sticks and CD-ROMs are inserted,
the icons that appear for them appear over the top of icons that are
originally on the desktop, again requiring user intervention to separate
them. It is the opinion of the writer that this behaviour should not
occur and that it is a universal problem with all Ubuntu distributions
and has been for some time. Display behaviour such as this is not only
inconvenient, it looks extremely amateurish and is in such stark
contrast to the arrangement of icons in the Windows OS that it is likely
to be one of the first things that new users of Ubuntu will notice and
find frustrating.
