Reverting to gnome-system-tools 2.30.0-0ubuntu2 (from Lucid) does make a difference. I also needed to install liboobs-1-4 2.30.0-0ubuntu1.
It eventually works, but outputs this warning: (users-admin:3551): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error communicating asynchronously with the backends: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
