You have been subscribed to a public bug:

During execution of a sudo initialized BASH script command:
cp -pRuv   /media/CQ6-UBUNTU   /media/ASKL-DATA/SV_CQ6UB  >>  cpwdata.log

these /usr/lib files was erased:

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root       20 2009-11-07 13:41 libbonobo-2.so.0 ->
libbonobo-2.so.0.0.0
-rw-r--r--  1 root root        0 2009-10-08 02:37 libbonobo-2.so.0.0.0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root       29 2009-11-07 13:41 libbonobo-activation.so.4 ->
libbonobo-activation.so.4.0.0
-rw-r--r--  1 root root        0 2009-10-08 02:37 libbonobo-activation.so.4.0.0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root       23 2009-11-07 10:13 libgnomespeech.so.7 ->
libgnomespeech.so.7.0.1
-rw-r--r--  1 root root        0 2009-10-08 02:37 libgnomespeech.so.7.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root       19 2009-11-07 10:14 libORBit-2.so.0 ->
libORBit-2.so.0.1.0
-rw-r--r--  1 root root        0 2009-10-08 02:37 libORBit-2.so.0.1.0

The boot of executing (and failing) system stopped after the message "Checking
battery state ..." was issued.
/media/CQ6-UBUNTU is an other Ubuntu system. /media/ASKL-DATA/SV_CQ6UB is a
backup of CQ6-UBUNTU created by a "cp -a" command and is the data partition of
the failing Ubuntu system. CQ6-UBUNTU and the failing system (with
/media/ASKL-DATA/) are on different USB disks. The goal of the script was an
update of /media/ASKL-DATA/SV_CQ6UB after CQ6-UBUNTU system update. Test on
another system, the error also occured on that system

The bug was solved by copying the good files.

All systems (CQ6-UBUNTU and the failing systems) are at the same level:
Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic), Linux 2.6.31.17, Gnome 2.28.1
