on Windows and on Mac a drop down or popup menu goes away when clicked away from its content and the mouse click is not wasted but received by the underlined control. It would be nice to have a similar option on linux too. I was curious, if Andreas submitted an request regarding this issue to gnome.org or freedesktop community?
