I have since upgraded ubuntu to 10.10, a version which now uses consolekit, and I no longer experience the problem.
But, before, using 10.04, the easiest way to see the problem was to rapidly switch back and forth between two logged in users using fast user switching. While switching, a screensaver would obviously operate.
