Thanks for your reply madbiologist. Yes, I think you are correct. I've been checking all the audio channels and in fact I do expect a 5.1 upmix, whereas I get a 5.0 upmix (from a stereo audio file)(Note this is an erratum in my first post). But when checking other applications indeed the upmix happens there aswell, also to 5.0 upmix level.
When re-setting this 5.1 setting by hand in Totem (via preferences) the upmix works correct. I've not been able to perform the same check on Rhythmbox since there's no setting for audio.
