This bug has morphed from it's original goal. The bug was opened about the GDM login screen (greeter) not being able to log into remote systems, as it did pre GDM 2.20.
The majority of the comments here are about the XDMCP server in GDM not working, probably due to implementation errors with IPv6 and/or 32/64 bit issues. I've opened a bug 689988 to track the original GDM UI problems, if you were following that issue, please change to that bug.
