Same problem here in Karmic and/or F-Spot.
Just for the record, there seems to be two parallel Bugs being investigated:-

Bug #331681 in linux (Ubuntu): "Error initializing camera ...

an error on connecting the camera since f-spot can not lock the device. ...

Can the respective developement teams not get together to solve
