I may have had this same problem. After several restarts of rhythmbox and reinserting the cd it would fail each time upon reaching the same track. The track in question contained a question mark in the name and another had an exclamation mark. I restarted rhythmbox and renamed the tracks (removed the special chars) and encoding proceeded fine.
