Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

When I start a new gnome-session (desktop), I see the default ubuntu
theme for a few seconds and then suddenly a new look and feel appears
(See screenshot). After that it is not possible to change look and feel
anymore.

It seems that compiz is trying to start on a non 3D capable display (I
am using VMWare ) and probably that is messing some gnome service after
it fails to load. (See .xsession-errors)

I think gnome session should have a more elegant default when compiz
can't be enabled.
