Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

It seems the gnome-settings-daemon is not operating correctly. I am not
sure of its proper operation - however, if I log in, then log out, then
log back in, my .xsession-errors reports:

You can only run one xsettings manager at a time; exiting

If I kill -9 the gnome-settings-daemon then run 'gnome-settings-daemon'
all is well. (Desktop is restored to proper look and feel)

64 Bit Ubuntu Maverick. This behavior started recently. I am guessing
that an update within the last two weeks introduced a regression.
