Okay here is a simple modification that makes the preferences window smaller. You can even try it without having to recompile evolution. What I did is the following: In the "Mail Preferences" part I added a new tab named "Display" from the "General" tab I then moved the "Message Fonts" part and "Message Display" part to the new "Display" tab.
