GNOME rewrote the network-admin functionality during the latest release
and didn't replicate some of the functionality; namely ESSID and PPP
auto-detection.
You can use the 'iwlist' command to list wireless settings and networks
from the command line; eg:
/sbin/iwlist eth1 scan
Cell 01 - Address: 00:16:CF:01:0D:4C
ESSID:"Livebox-8838"
Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg
Mode:Master
....
