Of course implementing a setting in gnome-mouse->touchpad would be
desirable and I don't understand why they don't. KDE has a nice GUI
configuration tab.

Anyway, a quick workout in Ubuntu Natty, working in squeeze as well, is
to add a tiny script in autostart, working "per user":

synclient TabButton2=2
synclient TabButton2=2

I seem to recall it has been already mention here and elsewhere.

BTW Gnome might have their good reasons, but I _do_ use two finger
tapping  a lot and find three finger usage a bit awkward. and less
precise.
