Binary package hint: gnome-panel
With QT applications the tray icon is drawn very very little.
You could check it with with
/usr/lib/qt4/examples/desktop/systray/systray
of qt4-demos packat or with psi-plus jabber client.
The example's binary, has been copied to a different computer with
lucid(details down), executed and worked properly.
